SUBJECT: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Inspection

MODELS: All U.S. Specification BMW Cars

Situation: All U.S. specification BMW cars, regardless of age or mileage, are eligible for a no-charge A/C SYSTEM INSPECTION. Reimbursement will be through normal BMW warranty channels. Warranty codes and times are listed later in this bulletin.

The following 10-points are to be performed at this inspection:

1. Check compressor drive belt condition and tension.
2. Check compressor mounting assembly.
3. Visually check compressor for leakage.
4. Visually check air conditioner hoses for external damage.
5. Visually check condensor coils for external restrictions. START ENGINE AND TURN A/C ON
6. Check blower fan in all speed selections and leave set on maximum setting. Turn temperature switch for maximum cooling setting.
7. Check [1][2]auxiliary fan operation.
8. Check compressor and magnetic clutch operation.
9. Check Freon level in sight glass and overall system operation (sight glass should be free of bubbles once system has stabilized.)
10. Run engine at 1800-2000 rpm. Turn blower fan to position II. Check temperature at air outlets. Allow system to cycle three times. (Temperature should be between 38~ to 45~F)

Terms of the BMW Limited Warranty apply to items which may need adjustment and/or replacement.

Follow this free 10-point inspection any items requiring repairs which are not covered by the regular BMW New Car Warranty are to be charged to the customer.

The Service Manager or the Service Advisor should also inform owners of the models listed below that, due to their different design and operational characteristics, the A/C systems of the following models will undergo an additional and more comprehensive inspection, as described in these SI bulletins.

Customers of these affected cars should be made aware that these additional inspections are also free of charge, and that they require a longer time to be performed.
The Evaporator Temperature Sensor replacement, and the Evaporator Temperature Regulator check should be done systematically on all affected E28's and E24's, as per S.I. 64 06 86 (1276).

Additionally, the service advisor should ask the customer if the A/C system of his car sprays condensate from the outlet grills or leaks condensate in the front footwells in hot and humid weather. Only if either of these two complaints is registered, please perform the A/C housing modification described in S.I. 64 07 86 (1277).

For the E23, please perform the A/C de-icing switch check and relay installation systematically on all affected cars.

Additionally, the Service Advisor should find out from the customer how his A/C performs in city driving, and only if the customer is not satisfied with the cooling capacity of his air conditioner in city driving, please follow the procedure described in S.I. 64 03 86 (1273) to replace the crankshaft pulley by a larger diameter one. This larger pulley will cause the compressor to rotate at higher RPM, and thus increase its cooling efficiency.
