SUBJECT: Outside mirrors
MODELS: 528e, 533i, 535i
General
Information: Three versions of outside mirrors have been used in production. Versions 2 and 3 are still being used.
Removal/replacement procedures for the mirror glass of versions 1 and 2 are described in S.I. 51 01 81 (530).
Removal/replacement procedure for the mirror glass of version 3 is described in this S.I.
Version 1: up to December 1980
Mirror fastened with adhesive:

Version 2: from December 1980
Mirror with bayonet attachment:
For removal/replacement see Service Information 51 01 81 (530).
Version 3: additional supplier as of Sept. 1983
Mirror fastened with adhesive (base plate mounted on three ball sockets).
Removal/replacement procedure for version 3 mirror glass:
Lever out mirror glass and base plate using an electrician's (insulated shank) screwdriver.
Heat mirror glass to approx. 167~ F/75~C with a heat gun until it can be removed from base plate with a wooden wedge, screwdriver or similar implement. Adhesive remaining on the base plate should be removed with a rag, slightly heating the base plate again if necessary.
Fasten mirror glass (P/N 51 16 1 909 097 version 1) with adhesive on the cooled base plate and lightly press on over the entire surface.
Clip in the base plate with the new mirror glass to the movable ball studs (1 + 2) and then to the fixed ball stud (3).
