Driver Airbag

Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring with Slip Ring

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Special Screwdriver T8 (T40056 A)





Removing

• Airbag Spiral Spring/Return Spring With Slip Ring (F138) must be installed and removed in center position (wheels straight).

CAUTION!
Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag System General Safety Precautions.

- Switch on ignition.

• To remove the airbag, battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched on, this deviates from the description "disconnecting and connecting battery".

- Remove luggage compartment floor trim.





- Disconnect battery ground strap - arrow -.

- Remove driver side airbag unit. Refer to => [ Driver Airbag Igniters ] Driver Airbag Igniters.

- Remove steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Steering Wheel.

- On vehicles with electrically adjustable steering columns, remove lower driver side instrument panel cover. Refer to => [ Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover ] Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover.

- If the old (T40056) is still on hand, grind around at places marked with - arrows -.





- Remove screws - 3 - and - 4 - with (T40056 A).





- If equipped, open mechanical steering column adjustment at grip - 5 -.

- Remove TORX screws - 6 -.

- Separate upper steering column switch trim - 2 - from lower trim - 1 - and remove both parts.

- If equipped, disconnect electrical connection on lower trim.

- Disconnect upper electrical connection on return spring with slip ring.





- Carefully release catches - arrows - and remove return spring with slip ring - 1 - from steering column switch module (SMLS).

• Shown in illustration with steering column switch module (SMLS) removed.

Installation

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:

- Ensure all catches and connections engage cleanly.

- Guide upper steering column switch trim into lower trim catches, push both pieces together and screw in.

- Install lower instrument panel trim on driver side. Refer to => [ Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover ] Lower Driver Side Instrument Panel Cover.

- Install steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Steering Wheel

- Install driver side airbag unit. Refer to => [ Installing ] Driver Airbag Igniters.
