Affected Vehicles
Condition
Coolant warning light on or coolant loss.
Technical Background
The left and/or right side radiator cooling fans may not work because of water ingress into the fans' motors or control units. The failure is caused by corrosion of the fan motor or the fan control unit. The coolant temperature may exceed the permissible value; which leads to increased system pressure, and leaks on the cooling system. The leaks may be noticed on the coolant reservoir.
Production Solution
Splash guard installed on cooling fan to protect the fan motor and the control unit.
Service
1. Remove the front vehicle underbody cover. Refer to Body Exterior >> Rep. Gr 66 >> Removal and Installation.
2. Check the both fans for stiffness or rough running. If necessary, replace one or both auxiliary cooling fans (if applicable).
3. Install the two splash guards.
Tip: The splash guard must be fitted with the arrow on the splash guard aligned with fan control unit. (Figure 1).
4. Check cooling system for leaks, repair as necessary.
5. Check fan operation.
6. Replace front underbody cover.
