Affected Vehicles
Condition
This RVU has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
On Audi R8 vehicles with R tronic(R) manufactured within a specific period, the gear shift response on R tronic(R) may become impaired.
This Required Vehicle Update (RVU) is in effect until June 30, 2011. After that date, this RVU will expire and no longer be in effect.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
^ Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 37E1 code in the ElsaWeb Campaign/Action Information screen on the day of repair.
^ Vehicle must be within the Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
^ Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
^ Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.
Technical Background
On certain Audi R8 vehicles with R tronic(R) manufactured within a specific period it is possible that the gear detector sensors fail to work. As a result the gearbox malfunction light will illuminate and the R tronic(R) transmission will go into emergency operation mode.

Service
Input the vehicle's VIN into ElsaWeb to determine which Criteria IDs apply.
Tip: Not all vehicles will require all repairs. Claims for repairs not required for the VIN will be denied.
1. If a vehicle is affected by criterion 01, replace gear detector sensors G604 and G61 6. (See Repair Manual >> Transmission >> R-Tronic Transmission >> Removal and Installation >> Gear Recognition Sensor And Repair Manual >> Transmission >> R-Tronic Transmission � Removal and Installation >> Gear Recognition Sensor 2.)
2. If a vehicle is affected by criterion 02, install adapter wiring harnesses for sensors. (See Repair Manual� Transmission � R-Tronic Transmission � Removal and Installation � Adapter Wire Sets, Gear Recognition Sensor 2 and Gear Recognition Sensor, Installing.)
3. On all vehicles affected by this RVU, check all four brackets (Figure 1, points 3 and 10) for exhaust system.
4. If brackets are not damaged, no further work is required on brackets for exhaust system.
If one of the brackets is damaged (rubber broken), replace all four brackets. When installing, note the following:
Bracket for exhaust system (top):
1 - Washer N011 527 21
2 - Spacer N 015 402 7
Bracket for exhaust system (bottom):
1 - Washer N011 527 21
5. Apply three adhesive pads (spacers) to inside of bumper as shown in Figures 5 and 6.

REQUIRED PARTS AND TOOLS
^ Destroy and properly dispose of removed parts in accordance with local, state and federal/provincial environmental regulations.
^ If you have exhausted your allocated parts and you require additional parts for vehicles affected by this RVU but have exceeded your Upper Order Limit, please submit your requests for additional parts via email. Be sure to include the affected VINs with your order. Prior to submitting your request, ensure that each vehicle has the 37E1 code open in ElsaWeb. Your order will be reviewed and processed accordingly.
