Battery Interrupt Igniter through 05.2006
Battery Interrupt Igniter through 05.2006
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
CAUTION!
The battery interrupt igniters (N253) are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag System General Safety Precautions.
• If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) illuminates after a collision, check for stored collision data using the. If data is present, check if the fault 001 Resistance Too High is stored in the DTC memory for the battery interrupt igniter (N253). If it is, replace the battery interrupt igniter (N253).
• The battery interrupt igniter (N253) interrupts the circuit when an airbag deploys. Always replace the battery interrupt igniter (N253) after an airbag deploys.
Removing
• To remove the airbag, battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched on, this deviates from the description "disconnecting and connecting battery".
- Switch on ignition.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove battery.
- Release the clips - arrows - and open the cover - 1 - on the battery interrupt igniter (N253).
- Remove nuts - 1 - and - 3 - as well as bolts - 4 - from positive cables.
- Remove the battery interrupt igniter (N253) - 2 - from the bracket.
CAUTION!
Before disconnecting electrical connection, technician must discharge electrostatic energy. To do this, briefly touch door lock, for example.
- Disconnect the connector - 5 -.
- Push connector lock - 1 - to stop - arrow -; this disconnects electrical connection - 2 - and it can be removed.
• Observe disposal of pyrotechnic airbag units. Refer to => [ Pyrotechnic Airbag Unit Disposal ] Procedures
Installation
CAUTION!
The battery interrupt igniters (N253) are pyrotechnic components. The same safety measures apply as with airbags. Observe safety precautions for work on airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag System General Safety Precautions ] Airbag System General Safety Precautions.
Installation is reverse of removal, but note the following:
- Observe the specified tightening specification.
- When connecting electrical connector, ensure it engages securely and locking mechanism is OK.
CAUTION!
No one should be in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
- Follow measures after connecting batter.
- To complete, check DTC memory for airbag control module and perform the required work steps if necessary.
