Self-canceling Ring With Slip Ring, Removing And Installing

Driver's airbag unit and steering wheel removed.

- Pull steering column out and tilt downward as far as it will go.







- Remove screws - 1 - (2x).
Tightening torque: 2.8 Nm (25 in.lb)
- Remove grip - 2 -.







- Remove two Phillips-head screws -arrows-.
Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5 in.lb)
- Take off upper steering column switch trim - 1 -.
When installing, insert upper section into hooks of lower section, swivel downward and secure with screws.







- Remove screws - 2 - (2x).
Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5 in.lb)
- Remove socket-head bolt - 1 -.
Tightening torque: 0.6 Nm (5 in.lb)
- Take off lower steering column switch trim - 3 -.







- Separate connection - 1 -.
- Release locking lugs -arrows- and pull self-canceling ring with slip ring off steering column switch.

NOTE:
- The steering must be in the center position (wheels in straight-ahead position) when the self-canceling ring and slip ring are removed and installed.
- As a replacement part, self-canceling ring with slip ring is secured in the center position with a cable tie or a tearing-ring.
- For vehicles with ESP the sensor in return ring with slip ring, steering angle sensor -G85-, must be adjusted.

NOTE:
- After connecting battery, check vehicle equipment (radio, clock, power windows) as per Repair Manual and/or Owner's manual.
- If the airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) -K75- signals a malfunction after assembling then the DTC memory must be erased and checked again with VAG 1551 scan tool.
