Center differential gear oil, checking and topping off
- If necessary, loosen or remove relevant parts of the exhaust system to gain access to filler plug (arrow B).
- Remove filler plug -arrow B-.
^ The fluid level must be up to lower edge of filler opening.
- If necessary top up with gear oil.
- Always replace plug.
- Install new plug.
- Re-secure or re-install exhaust system free of stress.
Tightening Torque:
Center differential gear oil, changing or refilling after repairs
Special tools and equipment
- VAG1306 drip tray
Draining
- Place VAG1306 drip tray under differential.
- Remove drain plug -arrow A- and let gear oil drain
- Always replace drain plug.
- Install new drain plug (arrow A).
Filling up gear oil
- If necessary, loosen or remove relevant parts of the exhaust system to gain access to oil filler plug (arrow B)
Note: There is a distinction made between two cases.
A - Transfer case was not removed.
B - Transfer case was removed
A - Transfer case was not removed (e.g. after removing and installing drive flange)
- Remove oil filler plug (arrow B).
- Top up transmission fluid to lower edge of oil filler hole.
- Install old oil filler plug.
Note: If it was necessary to loosen or remove the exhaust system, this must be re-secured or reinstalled for the road test. It must be removed and installed again for the final oil level check.
- Road test vehicle (15 minutes pure driving).
Note: During test drive, axle oil will enter output cover and Torsen differential; oil level in transfer case housing will drop.
- Fill transfer housing with gear oil and check oil level.
B - Transfer case was removed and disassembled
- Add 200 ml axle oil to output cover.
- Assemble transfer case and install.
- Remove oil filler plug (arrow B).
- Add 600 ml axle oil to transfer case housing.
- Always replace oil filler plug.
- Install new oil filler plug.
Note: Oil level does not need to be re-checked.

- Secure or re-install exhaust system free of stress
