Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
5VAS 5051 Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system or VAG 1551 scan tool, connecting and selecting functions
Test requirements:
^ Battery voltage at least 11 V
^ Ground connections on engine and transmission OK.
^ Engine off
^ Automatic transmission in position "P" or "N"
Procedure
- Connect up vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 with diagnostic cable VAS 5051/1 with the ignition switched off. Alternatively, connect V.A.G 1551 scan tool with diagnostic cable VAG 1 551 /3A.
Note: The following describes self-diagnosis using the V.A.G. 1551 only scan tool.
When using the VAS 5051 vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system, follow the procedures described in equipment's operating instructions.
Indication on display:

Note: If the display remains blank:
Refer to Scan tool operating instructions
- Switch the ignition on.
- Switch on the scan tool printer with the print key. The indicator lamp in the key must light up.
- Press key 1 for"Rapid data transfer".
Indicated on display:
Note: Address word 00 is used to start the automatic test sequence i.e. interrogation of fault memories in all vehicle systems with self-diagnosis capability in vehicle with rapid data transfer.
- Enter "01" for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry with Q key.
The V.A.G 1551 scan tool display will show the control module identification. For exam pie:
Note: The control module identification can be printed out by pressing the PRINT key on V.A.G. 1551 scan tool.

Basic setting
- Press the Pokey until the following display appears:
Indicated on display (function selection):
- Press keys 0 and 4 for "Basic setting" and confirm the entry with the Q key.
Indicated on display (function selection):
- Press keys 0-0 and 8 for "Perform short trip UP 28" and confirm the entry with the Q key.
Indicated on display (function selection):
- Press 4.
- Firmly apply the brake pedal several times in succession (venting the brake servo) until the test is activated.
Indicated on display (function selection):
- Once the test has been activated the brake pedal must not be applied again.
The pump evacuates the brake servo. The diagnosis of the brake servo system runs in parallel in the control module. The system passes the test if the pressure in the brake servo reaches the shut-off threshold within the time limit set by the diagnostic function (max. 20 see).

- Press 8.
- Remove the diagnostic cable from the diagnostic connection.

If after the test the system is not OK, read out the fault memory and rectify the fault (ignition OFF).
- Afterward perform the short trip again.
Performing final control diagnosis
- Connect the scan tool and select the engine electronics function.
- Press -key.

- Press keys O and 3 for "Final control diagnosis" and confirm the entry with the Q key.
- Press the Key until the following text appears:

- Confirm the entry with the Q key.
The electric vacuum pump should now run for approximately 10 sec.
- Remove the diagnostic cable from the diagnostic connection.
