Front

Front brake pads, replacing (S4/S6 models)

Note: Brake pads must be replaced at room temperature.

Removing

- Remove wheels.
- Mark positions of brake pads that are to be used again. Install again in same place, to ensure uniform braking.






- Secure brake disc on wheel hub with a wheel bolt.
- Remove both Torx bolts for outer brake pads.


WARNING: Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be siphoned by mouth through a hose. If brake fluid contacts eyes or skin, flush or wash adequately to prevent irritation. Get medical attention if necessary.

CAUTION: Extract part of the brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir before pushing back the pistons.
Use the bleeder bottle or a plastic bottle, which is used only for brake fluid, for extracting the fluid. Otherwise, particularly if the brake fluid has been topped up in the meantime, brake fluid may flow out and cause damage.







- Press piston back in brake caliper housing by inserting screwdriver in floating frame and pressing firmly to outside.
- Remove outer brake pad by pressing brake pads back from brake caliper with screwdriver.






- Disconnect harness connector by pressing spring (right arrow).
- Remove brake pad wear indicator wire from brake caliper bracket (left arrow).






- Carefully lift holding strap up slightly from lower part of connector with screwdriver, then turn 90° to right or left and remove from bracket.






- Press caliper floating frame back forcefully in direction shown (arrow) to stop.
- Carefully pry brake pads out of piston with screwdriver and remove from brake caliper housing

Note: Be fore installing new brake pads, thoroughly clean brake caliper housing. Pay special attention to removing adhesive film residue caused by the outer brake pad backing plate.

Installing

- Install brake pad with brake pad wear indicator wire into upper piston.

Note: When installing brake pads, do not damage protective caps (dust boots).




- Install lower brake pad in piston; pay attention to guides of two brake pad backing plates.
- Clip wire for brake pad wear indicator into bracket on brake caliper.
- Install lower part of connector for brake pad wear indicator in bracket on brake caliper.






- Press floating frame outward to stop.
- Pull adhesive backing off outer brake pad backing plates.
- Install both outer brake pads while paying attention to guide pins on pad backing plates and guide slots in brake calipers. Do not damage adhesive layer on backing plate.
- Fasten brake pads to caliper floating frame with Torx� bolts contained in repair kit, and tighten.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)






- Remove wheel bolt from wheel hub.

Note: Four self-locking Torx� bolts are included in the repair kit and must all be installed. Depress brake pedal forcefully several times until brake pads assume operating position.

- Check brake fluid level, top off if necessary
