Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

CAUTION:
All linings on one axle should be replaced at same time. Use linings of same quality.

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove dust cap, cotter pin, wheel nut cover and wheel nut, then the thrust washer and outer wheel bearing.
3. Working through wheel bolt hole, pry adjusting wedge up against stop with screwdriver and remove brake drum.
4. Remove caps from shoe retaining springs by pressing retainer against spring, then rotate 90°.
5. Unhook lower return spring.
6. Lift shoes out from support.
7. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever.
8. Clamp shoes in suitable vise.

Rear Brake Shoes:





9. Unhook upper return and adjusting wedge springs.

Rear Drum System, Tension Spring:





10. Unhook tension spring.

Rear Drum System:





11. Apply suitable grease to contact surface of brake lever,install shoe with lever in push rod.
12. Insert adjusting wedge with lug toward backing plate.
13. Install shoe with lever in pushrod.
14. Connect upper return spring.
15. Hook parking brake cable on lever.
16. Place shoes on wheel cylinder piston.
17. Connect lower return spring and lift shoes onto lower support.
18. Connect adjusting wedge spring.
19. Install shoe retaining springs and caps.
20. Install brake drum, then adjust wheel bearing as described in ``Rear Axle & Suspension.''
21. Depress brake pedal once firmly to set the rear brake shoes.

NOTE:
- To inspect brake lining thickness, condition, remove plug on lower surface of backing plate.
