Steering Angle Sensor Causes False SAS, VSA, CMBS, or AFS Messages (Supersedes 09-025, dated June 12, 2009, to revise the information marked by the black bars and asterisks)

*REVISION SUMMARY

Under REPAIR PROCEDURE, steps 17 thru 21 were reorganized to show the correct sequence of the procedure.*

SYMPTOM

While driving, the MIL comes on, along with MID and navigation screen messages from the SAS (steering angle sensor), the VSA (vehicle stability assist) system, the CMBS (collision mitigation braking system) or the AFS (adaptive front lighting system).

PROBABLE CAUSE

A software problem with the steering angle sensor causes faulty data to be sent to the vehicle control units that are dependent on SAS input.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the steering angle sensor (SAS). The SAS is installed in the combination switch body on the steering column.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Connect the HDS to the vehicle's DLC.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check for DTCs:

^ If any fuel and emission DTCs are stored, troubleshoot them first, then recheck for other DTCs.

^ If VSA DTC 27-1 is stored, do not clear it; go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

^ If any other DTCs are stored, this service bulletin does not apply. Troubleshoot and repair any other DTCs that you found.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
This procedure is in an outline form that you can also use as a checklist for the repair. If you need more details, bookmark the following procedures in the 2OO9-2010 RL Service Manual, or view them online:

^ Battery Terminal Disconnection/Reconnection

^ Driver's Airbag Removal/Installation

^ Steering Wheel Removal/Installation

^ Cable Reel Replacement

1. Back the vehicle into a work area that has at least 10 feet (3 meters) of level surface in front of it.

2. Extend the steering column all the way back and down. Make sure the steering wheel and the front wheels are pointed straight ahead.

3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then disconnect the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes.

4. Remove the driver's airbag.

5. Mark the position of the steering wheel on the shaft of the steering column, then remove the steering wheel.

NOTE:
To avoid cable reel damage, do not turn the cable reel when the steering wheel is off.

6. Remove the steering column covers.

7. Remove the cable reel from the steering column shaft.

8. Disconnect the combination switch assembly connectors, then remove the two screws, and lift the assembly off the steering column shaft.

9. Remove the combination light switch and the wiper/washer switch from the combination switch body (four screws).

10. Install the combination light switch and the wiper/washer switch onto a new combination switch body.

11. Install the combination switch assembly onto the steering column shaft. Make sure all of the connectors are securely connected.

12. Carefully reinstall the cable reel.

13. Reinstall the steering column covers.

14. Line up the marks you made on the steering wheel and the steering column shaft, and reinstall the steering wheel. Torque the steering wheel nut to 49 N.m (36 lb-ft).

NOTE:
To avoid steering wheel movement while tightening the nut, tighten it first with an air wrench, then finish up torquing it by hand.

15. Reinstall the driver's airbag with two new TORX bolts. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

16. Reconnect the battery.

*17. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), connect the HDS to the vehicle's DLC, then turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

18. Start the engine, and let it idle.

19. Do the VSA sensor neutral memorization procedure with the HDS.

NOTE:

^ Follow the HDS screen prompts.

^ Do not press the brake pedal during the procedure.

^ The procedure can only be started by clearing a DTC. Press the DTC button on the HDS VSA DTC screen to start the procedure.

20. After the VSA sensor neutral memorization is completed, turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

21. Clear any other system DTCs (AFS, CMBS, SH-AWD, etc.) with the HDS.*
