SH-AWD DTC Troubleshooting: 42-2

DTC 42-2: Differential Fluid Temperature Sensor (Open/GND Short)

NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, review the general troubleshooting information. Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

2. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the SH-AWD control unit. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit. Testing and Inspection

3. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

4. Raise the vehicle, make sure it is securely supported, and allow all four wheels to rotate freely.

5. Start the engine and turn the VSA off (the light on the VSA OFF switch comes on). Run the engine in the D position until the vehicle speed reaches 35 mph (56 km/h) and keep running for 10 minutes, then slow down and stop the wheels.

6. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 42-2 indicated?
YES - Go to step 7.

NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.


7. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

8. Disconnect SH-AWD control unit connector A (26P).

9. Connect SH-AWD control unit connector terminal A9 to body ground with a jumper wire.

10. Disconnect the rear differential fluid temperature sensor 2P connector.






11. Check for continuity between rear differential fluid temperature sensor 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground.

Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 12.

NO - Repair open in the wire between SH-AWD control unit connector A and the rear differential fluid temperature sensor connector.






12. Remove the jumper wire from SH-AWD control unit connector terminal A9.

13. Connect SH-AWD control unit connector terminal A23 to body ground with a jumper wire.






14. Check for continuity between rear differential fluid temperature sensor 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.

Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 15.

NO - Repair open in the wire between SH-AWD control unit connector A and the rear differential fluid temperature sensor connector.






15. Check for continuity between SH-AWD control unit connector terminals A9 and A12.

Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between SH-AWD control unit connector A and the rear differential fluid temperature sensor connector.

NO - Go to step 16.






16. Check for continuity between SH-AWD control unit connector terminals A12 and A23.

Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short in the wire between SH-AWD control unit connector A and the rear differential fluid temperature sensor connector.

NO - Go to step 17.






17. Reconnect the rear differential fluid temperature sensor 2P connector and SH-AWD control unit connector A (26P).

18. Measure the resistance between SH-AWD control unit connector terminals A9 and A23.

Is there 12.67 kOhms or less?
YES - Substitute a known-good SH-AWD control unit Service and Repair and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with the known-good SH-AWD control unit, replace the original SH-AWD control unit. Service and Repair

NO - Replace the rear differential fluid temperature sensor. Service and Repair
