Heater Core Case: Service and Repair

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures in the SRS section before performing repairs or service.

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. When the engine is cool, drain the engine coolant from the radiator.
Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot; the engine coolant is under pressure and could severely scald you.

3. Remove the mounting nut and the heater valve, then disconnect the heater hoses from the heater unit.

CAUTION: Engine coolant will damage paint. Quickly rinse any spilled engine coolant from painted surfaces.

NOTE: Engine coolant will run out when the hoses are disconnected; drain it into a clean drip pan.

4. Remove the dashboard.

5. Remove the seven mounting bolts and the steering hanger beam.

6. Remove the wire harness clips, the three self-tapping screws and the pipe cover.

7. Disconnect the connector from the recirculation control motor, then remove the self-tapping screw from the pipe clamp.

8. Disconnect the connectors from the power transistor, blower motor high relay, evaporator temperature sensor, blower motor and the heater sub-harness, then remove the heater sub-harness connector from the bracket.

9. Remove the clips from the right and left heater ducts, and the SRS main harness clips from the heater unit. Remove the three self-tapping screws, the six mounting bolts, the bracket and the heater unit.
10. Install in the reverse order of removal. Make note of the following items.

^ Apply sealant to the grommets.
^ Do not interchange the inlet and outlet heater hoses. Make sure that the clamps are secure.
^ Loosen the bleed bolt on the engine, and refill the radiator and the coolant reservoir with the proper engine coolant mixture. Tighten the bleed bolt when all the trapped air has escaped and engine coolant begins to flow from it.
^ Make sure that there is no air leakage.
