Alternator: Service and Repair

On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.

1. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures.
2. Remove lefthand side drive axle.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Disconnect alternator electrical connectors.
5. Loosen alternator adjusting nut, then remove alternator belt from pulley.
6. Remove lower alternator through bolt, then the alternator mounting bracket.
7. Remove alternator adjusting nut and bolt.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replace driveshaft set ring.
b. Torque alternator mounting bracket to 33 ft. lbs.
c. Torque adjusting nut to 17 ft. lbs.
d. Torque terminal nut to 5.79 ft. lbs.
e. Tighten front suspension to specifications found in front suspension section of this chapter.
9. On models equipped with radio coded theft protection system, refer to Vehicle Damage Warnings for system disarming and arming procedures.
10. On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.
