Catalytic Converter: Testing and Inspection

The three-way catalytic converter found on these vehicles is used to convert hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gas, to carbon dioxide, di-nitrogen and water vapor.

Inspection

If excessive exhaust system back pressure is suspected, remove the converter from the vehicle and visually inspect for plugging, melting, or cracking of the catalyst. Replace converter if more than 50 percent of the visible area is damaged as mentioned above.
